Clean Seed Coordinator - Plant Tissue Culture

About the role

Belize Sugar Industries Ltd is seeking a Clean Seed Coordinator – Plant Tissue Culture to work at its Tower Hill facility in Orange Walk. The role is responsible for laboratory operations that support in‑vitro propagation of sugarcane, ensuring production of disease‑free, true‑to‑type plantlets that meet biosafety standards and production targets.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct tissue culture procedures including explant preparation, initiation, multiplication, rooting and acclimatization of sugarcane plantlets.
• Prepare and sterilize culture media, solutions, glassware and instruments following standard protocols.
• Identify and manage contamination (fungal, bacterial or physiological disorders).
• Assist in donor plant selection, culture initiation and maintenance of mother plant stock.
• Record laboratory data, production statistics and experiment results; maintain logs and inventory records.
• Support weaning, acclimatization and hardening of plantlets in greenhouse or nursery conditions.
• Follow biosafety, chemical handling and waste disposal procedures.
• Contribute to protocol improvements to increase multiplication rates, survival and cost efficiency.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Plant Biotechnology, Plant Science, Biology, Agriculture or a related field.
• 2‑5 years of laboratory experience, preferably with sugarcane tissue culture.
• Proven ability to work under sterile conditions with high attention to accuracy and data integrity.
• Capability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
• Physical ability to perform repetitive laboratory tasks and stand for extended periods.
• Willingness to work weekends or extended hours during peak production periods.
